This very well-written and captivating resource explains Islam using an accessible and balanced approach and rectifies the more egregious misconceptions about the religion that are often popularly cited. A strong choice for anyone of high school age and above who wishes to know about Islam and for those who provide ready reference.
This scholarly and comprehensive resource is fairly unusual in its focus on Muhammad and his legacy. Although there are many great works on Islam, this is the only one that concentrates particularly on the prophet and his influence. Slightly specialized, it will be most useful for university and religious studies students and larger public libraries.
This excellent survey of biblical archaeology will be useful for any researcher interested in the topic. It is too specialized for smaller public libraries but should be considered for larger public research institutions, college and university libraries supporting archaeology departments, and theology libraries interested in biblical scholarship.
This book is not likely to be particularly helpful for the general reader, as it is very dense and concentrates more on the state of the field and the theory and methodology of Islamic studies rather than discussing Islam itself. An excellent overview for advanced students and scholars pursuing research in the field of Islamic studies.
Hiro displays an admirable even-handedness when covering contentious areas. He gives equal time to both sides of a conflict or disagreement without passing judgment or editorializing, making this an excellent reference source for readers and students interested in solid, fair explanations of the history of, and frequently contentious issues at play in, the Middle East. For this reason, as well as for its very reasonable price tag, A Comprehensive Dictionary of the Middle East is highly recommended for secondary school and college students and for the both the specialist and the general reader interested in the region.
There is nothing else as complete, easy to use, and relevant for research in Islamic studies as OISO. Indispensible for academic, public, and theological libraries and highly recommended for secondary school libraries.
