Clive Cussler's early novels meet The Poseidon Adventure in this mix of maritime details with crime fiction elements. While a forced romance distracts from the intense narrative, the story's driving force, McKenna Rhodes, makes this a worthwhile entry in the world of nautical fiction. Future stories involving our protagonist will be more than welcome. [See Prepub Alert, 11/21/17.]
Short, heart-pounding chapters move the story along quickly, while the frigid setting adds to the eerie atmosphere. Fans of the series will eagerly consume this latest tale, though having read the previous titles is not necessary for newcomers' understanding or enjoyment. [See Prepub Alert, 9/26/16.]
Fans of Laukkanen's The Professionals who found the succeeding two books in this series somewhat disappointing will be delighted with this fast-moving installment. Here it is not the criminals who are intriguing, but rather the victims who turn out to be far stronger and more remarkable than originally anticipated. Recommended for fans of well-written, thought-provoking thrillers. [See Prepub Alert, 10/15/14.]
Fans of Breaking Bad will love this good-man-turned-bad story that has all the pacing of a car careening out of a control and enough stomach-twisting carnage to satisfy adrenaline junkies. (LJ 3/1/13)
While readers might identify with these good-man-gone-bad characters living frustrated and dissatisfied lives, they have to plod through the excessive procedural details that hamper the adrenaline-like pace of the rather bizarre plotline. [See Prepub Alert, 9/16/13.]
This is a terrific Great Recession thriller whose postmodern amorality grips from the beginning. While the criminals here are not as likable as Laukkanen's Arthur Pender gang from the first book, fans will not be disappointed. [See Prepub Alert, 9/17/12.]
This well-written debut crime novel features a chillingly postmodern amorality and well-developed protagonists on both sides of the law who will have readers rooting for them. Thriller fans will be chomping at the bit for the next Stevens and Windermere novel in the planned series.
