Calladia is a witch from a legacy family in Glimmer Falls, a history she combats physically in her personal-training business and hobby of getting in bar brawls. Astaroth is a demon lord with six centuries of repression and secrets. Unfortunately, he can’t remember any of it. Plus, another demon’s trying to kill him, and Calladia can’t kick his ass for previously threatening her friend’s soul until she fixes both. Calladia and Astaroth reluctantly team up to find a witch to kickstart his memories, but feelings develop quickly. Is this a case of simple attraction, or is there something deeper? And can it survive Astaroth getting his memories back? This second book in Hawley’s “Glimmer Falls” series (following A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon) continues with more witch-and-demon romance. The pacing—which revolves around a road-tripping quest while fleeing demon assassins—is surprisingly languid, bringing a cozier feel at the expense of tension. The novel features a multicultural and gender-inclusive cast, though the generic “madness” of Astaroth’s mother is mentioned often and never interrogated. Narrator Helen Laser does a fine job, though some of her different accents can muddle if she switches rapidly.
VERDICT A cozy paranormal romance suited for fans of the genre.
