A People's Guide to Los Angeles

The collaborative effort of more than 15 years, by three authors—Pulido (American studies & ethnicity, Univ. of Southern California), Laura Barraclough (sociology, Kalamazoo Coll.), and Wendy Cheng (Asian Pacific American studies and justice & social inquiry, Arizona State Univ.)—and many more contributors, this title provides a history of Los Angeles's social activism for the nontraditional tourist. There are 115 sites of significant interest explored across the greater Los Angeles area, plus additional recommendations for neighborhood restaurants and nearby attractions. In addition, 14 maps, 67 black-and-white photographs, 91 color illustrations, and seven specialized tours fill out this in-depth study of the real Los Angeles. Readers can read about the former site of fiery communist and socialist speeches in North L.A., the Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center on the Eastside, and South L.A.'s Chuco's Justice Center. Thematic tours range from those featuring first peoples to queer politics and culture. There's a weighty introduction to the entire book as well as individual essays that introduce each region.
