Drawing on her experience as a prosecutor and a TV journalist, Grace, with coauthor Hassan, collects stories of sexual assault, abduction, and murder. Some of her anecdotes conclude with the intended victim making it out alive, others end tragically, but all provide lessons on staying safe in a variety of situations and settings, from elevators to restaurants and bars to cruise ships. The book is organized into five parts (protecting oneself, one’s children, the elderly; remaining safe traveling; and staying safe online), making it easy to locate pertinent sections. Often overdramatic and intended to stoke up fear, the tales border on sensationalism, but the tips are practical (there is safety in numbers, don’t listen to music while running), albeit organized in a stream-of-consciousness fashion. Parents may find this book useful, as many of the tips are aimed at protecting children in both physical and online environments.
VERDICT For fans of Grace as well as those seeking advice on personal safety. [See Prepub Alert, 12/9/19.]
