In 2018, a disaster in another universe has caused seemingly random individuals to relocate spontaneously to our planet. The problem is that they feed off the energy of those around them, and a special paranormal institute has been tasked to study Jake, one of the few Echoes captured alive. The phenomena that created Echoes are not completely understood, but researcher Tess knows that having the feds, including FBI agent Ross McGinness, suddenly take over her project cannot be a good thing. She begins to have feelings for Ross, but when she learns that the government wants to weaponize the Echoes, she helps her test subject Jake to escape.
VERDICT The romance between Ross and Tess is given prominence in the plot but doesn't have enough substance to hold the weight asked of it, and the addition of another love interest when Jake falls for Tess doesn't help, creating melodrama but not real tension. The sf elements are also light and breezy, without any actual science to weigh them down. Three-time RWA Golden Heart finalist Fisher is also the author of Ghost Planet and The Ophelia Prophecy.
