In her first book, Christian apologist Dougherty describes the history, presence, and influence of New Thought philosophy in current U.S. culture. She reveals that her purpose in writing this book is to give Christians an understanding of New Thought—which embraces spiritual healing, constructive thinking, and guidance from an inner presence—and warn how it contradicts Christian orthodoxy and scripture. At the end of each chapter are Bible passages that counteract New Thought, along with additional books and resources, a written prayer, and a conclusion about that section’s topic. This highly, well-researched relevant book includes citations and an extensive bibliography.
VERDICT Dougherty is one of only a few people challenging the New Thought philosophy, which has influenced current culture and thinking in the United States. Her book’s tone is conversational and integrates her personal experiences, which is an approach that will appeal to many general readers. It makes a good addition to religion and philosophy collections.
