The Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO;
asianyouthorchestra.com) was founded with the help of Yehudi Menuhin in 1987 on a European model. Now, preprofessional classical musicians from 12 East Asian countries and territories audition for entrance to this annual three-week rehearsal and master class that results in international tours for the subsequent three weeks. Yang's well-made music-filled film follows individual teachers and students during the 2015 season. The AYO's ideals of "peace and friendship through music" (or "perfect consonance") are tested as the students search for common languages, learn new ensemble techniques (many have trained only as soloists), and share their passion for their art.
VERDICT This short adulatory documentary carries little educational content, but it does serve as an introduction to AYO.
