No Boundaries: Aboriginal Australian Contemporary Abstract Painting

The traditional art of the indigenous peoples of Australia primarily evoked visions of their spirit world. That art was largely rendered with bright colors, dots, circles, and undulating lines, elements that have inspired much of the artwork of contemporary Aboriginal painters. The collection of Debra and Dennis Scholl focuses on the best of purely abstract work from recent decades. This title is a catalog of the work of Paddy Bedford, Jananggoo Butcher Cherel, Prince of Wales (Midpul), Tommy Mitchell, Ngarra, Billy Joongoora Thomas, Boxer Milner Tjampitjin, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaptjarri, and Tjumpo Tjapanangka. It includes several essays providing overviews of contemporary Aboriginal art and its abstract nature, followed by chapters on each artist, with biographical information, descriptive analysis of their work, and color reproductions of the art. This catalog accompanies a traveling exhibition that originated in Nevada and will travel in the United States through 2016. The title ably demonstrates that the abstractions by Aboriginal artists are equal to those of Western artists of the modern era.
