OrangeReviewStarArchitect and tour guide Hill (Guide to Contemporary New York Architecture) describes ten separate walks through New York that feature much of the city's newest architecture (built since 2000). In his account of each walk and structure, Hill writes not only of the architectural and construction detail of each building but also blends the history of the sites and the city with fascinating tidbits on the machinations of government and the planning process. The book is beautifully illustrated with photographs of many of the structures by Bendov (New Architecture New York). Each description is a concise paragraph, separated by precise directions on how to walk to the next building on the tour. Each tour is accompanied by a detailed map of the entire walk, with buildings coded on the map to correspond to descriptions. Hill also provides the distance of each walk at the beginning of its chapter—a couple require subway travel.
VERDICT Of special interest to former and current New Yorkers, architects, and anyone planning to travel to the city, also delightful for armchair travelers.
