China's one-child policy was implemented in 1978, so the children of that year and the next are now near 40 years old. What are they like? Did this policy change them? Interviews with a selection of attractive men and women show that some wanted a sibling, others did not; some seem selfish and arrogant; some have successful relationships and careers; some get along well with their parents. For each positive outcome, there is a negative one. It's impossible to know if a sibling or two would have made a difference, but it seems unlikely; the sampling is too small to come to a definitive conclusion. Perhaps speculating on the economic impact of an additional 500 million Chinese individuals prevented by the one-child policy would have been a more fruitful endeavor.
VERDICT Not informative but fun for a glimpse of modern-day young people in China.
