In Ahern’s sequel to P.S. I Love You, published 20 years ago, Holly Kennedy has moved on with her life with the help of the letters that Gerry left for her to read after his death. Now Holly’s sister, Ciara, invites her to speak on a podcast about the letters and her grieving process. As a result of the podcast, a small group of terminally ill friends are inspired to ask Holly to form the P.S. I Love You Club. The members want to write letters or messages for their own loved ones. Holly is torn about participating, but she relents and helps out this sad crew. The members’ ideas are creative. A husband leads his wife on a scavenger hunt in limericks, a father makes a series of videotaped greetings for his children, and a teen mom learns how to write so she can pen a letter to her infant daughter. Each scenario tugs at the heartstrings, but none feel saccharine.
