Seymour Bernstein (b. 1927) was a concert pianist at the top of his form when he decided to change his life in music. He left public performance to devote himself to teaching and composing, which he felt were far more creative activities. This loving documentary shows him at his New York City studio-home and at work with aspiring pianists, addresses how he feels about his choice and his history, and gives students the chance to comment on his teaching style. Hawke directs so sensitively that Bernstein gets tears in his eyes after watching just the humble opening of the finished film—as did this reviewer. Bonus features include Bernstein in concert.
VERDICT A sympathetic portrait of a master teacher, worthy of study for its pedagogical methods, sure to be enjoyed for its sound and the serene humanity of its subject.
