With the help of French graphic novelist Matz (
Triggerman) and artist Jef (
Jim Morrison: Poet of Chaos), famed screenwriter/director Hill (
The Warriors;
48 Hours) pens this gritty graphic novel as a jumping-off point to his film adaptation of the same name released in theaters this month, starring Sigourney Weaver. Following the underworld odyssey of hit man Frank Kitchen, the story unfolds in the style of a traditional revenge drama, with Frank being betrayed by his criminal cohorts and almost killed. But this is not traditional crime fiction, as our protagonist awakens in a hospital after the attack to discover that he has been subjected to gender reassignment surgery. Having to acclimate to living as a woman, Frank sets out with two goals: retribution for the organization that betrayed her and to learn why they altered her sex as opposed to just getting rid of her completely.
VERDICT Hill and Matz deliver a compelling tale about loyalty and revenge, as well as a thought-provoking look at gender politics in our era. Supported by Jef's highly detailed, edgy artwork, this offering is ideal for mature readers seeking complex plotlines, moral ambiguity, and social commentary.
