This tie-in book from the “Fat White Vampire” series spins a tale of a highly destructive hurricane bearing down on New Orleans, whose cause is not just a matter of natural forces at work. A group of evil spirits, tricksters, and goblins is gathering negative energy emanating from humans there, to cause a catastrophe to drive residents out of the city. But the Miasma Club is not aware of the one member who is standing up to them. Kay Rosenblatt is an
ayin hora, a manifestation of the Evil Eye, and is willing to risk everything to destroy the club. Although she isn’t able to stop the hurricane from nearly leveling the city, she and some cohorts make a plan to stop the club from doing further harm. By writing both human and mythological character arcs, Fox has created a fascinating storyline. He weaves the folklore of New Orleans into a story about humanity’s negative impact on the environment.
VERDICT This is a standalone title, so familiarity with the series is not required. It is an excellent recommend for those interested in the spiritual and folkloric history of New Orleans.
