Bennett (SUNY New Paltz, Committee for the Scientific Study of Religion;
Victorian Images of Islam) and Muslim and non-Muslim scholars in the field discuss the history, research methods and problems, and current research and issues in Islamic studies. Each chapter deals with a particular topic within the field; these include Sufism, hadith studies, fiqh (jurisprudence), art and architecture, Quranic studies, Islamic theology, and the intersection of Islam and the West. A comprehensive chronology and a glossary help with context and definitions. There is also an extensive bibliography and an index.
VERDICT This book is not likely to be particularly helpful for the general reader, as it is very dense and concentrates more on the state of the field and the theory and methodology of Islamic studies rather than discussing Islam itself. For the latter, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World is likely to be far more helpful. An excellent overview for advanced students and scholars pursuing research in the field of Islamic studies.
