Bernstein (
Drink Better Beer) has revised and expanded his much-acclaimed earlier edition of this popular book. In 12 chapters, called “classes,” readers will learn all about beer essentials, including the different grains used for each type of beer. Additional classes include learning about pilsners, lagers, wheat beers, ales, Trappist-style ales, barley wines, and other assorted types of beers. Along the way there are sections addressing cold-fermentation, aging beer in wood, and other details necessary to becoming a beer connoisseur. Each class includes a spotlight focusing on a specific brewery and their specialties. Added features: specific glasses used for beer; learning how to describe different beer attributes; the temperatures, tastes, and appearances of specific types of beer; and suggestions for beer tastings. This remains an incredibly well-researched volume that’s fun to read. The wealth of information, including helpful illustrations, will take anyone from a novice to expert in short order.
VERDICT A most welcome revised edition. Best for anyone who enjoys consuming beer or brewing their own.
