The Doll

Vanessa Munroe is a survivor of the type of abuse that creates either psychopaths determined to destroy or vigilantes bent on justice for the innocent and helpless. Munroe is the latter. When the kidnappers of a movie star threaten violence to Munroe's loved ones unless she delivers the actress to her new owner, Munroe unwillingly takes the assignment. It's clear that her plan is to save the girl and those she loves by outwitting and outmaneuvering The Doll Maker, the mastermind behind the abduction of girls to sell into the sex slave trade. With the help of her colleagues in Dallas, Munroe makes her way through the Italian countryside, observed through the scope of an ever-present sniper. Hillary Huber reads Stevens's text with a poet's cadence. Though soft-spoken, Huber delivers in an eerily serious tone. She gives Munroe a sad, resigned voice, mostly void of emotion and hollowed out by PTSD. Fans of Larsen's "The Girl Who…" series will love Stevens's (The Informationist; The Innocent) original and exciting books.
