In between drunken nights and bedding the oracle/queen of Szayet (a client planet of the Ceian Empire), Admiral Anita “Ana” Decretan has spent the past year hunting down the assassins who murdered Matheus Ceirran, the commander of the expansive Ceian Empire. Now she is looking for the last of the participants in the murder, who is hiding in the Empire of Kutayet. Ana’s rush to Kutayet to avenge her lord brings about a discovery that could disrupt the fragile balance of power in the galaxy. Meanwhile, back in Ceiao, Ana’s home, Otávio Julhan has stepped in as Ceirran’s heir and is beginning to consolidate his own power in the capital. As Ana is forced to choose between romance and duty, everything and everyone she loves or has ever loved collides in a tidal wave of oncoming war. While the novel’s jumps in time and between perspectives can sometimes be confusing, the story is brought to a satisfying conclusion.
VERDICT Robin writes another queer space opera (a sequel to The Stars Undying) that showcases complex characters inspired by ancient history and set in the stars. This science-fiction interpretation of Mark Antony and Cleopatra’s relationship is woven together in a tight plot of false gods, technology, and legacy.
