When Willa’s sister Laika disappeared while walking to school, the course of Willa’s life was forever changed. Though Willa tries to move forward as an adult, every tiny hint or hunch reignites her obsession with finding out what happened to Laika, forever framing her relationships against a backdrop of abuse and uncertainty. Willa’s friend and first love, Robyn, was one such casualty, as their blossoming relationship came at a time when Willa’s fragile heart couldn’t withstand the strain of her grief. Decades later, the truth of what happened finally comes to light. Collins makes a compelling debut with this tale of guilt, grief, and dysfunction. An intricate plot and multiple perspectives enhance the atmosphere of the narrative. Even so, while the overall story is suspenseful, the finale falls a bit flat. Narrator Emily Lucienne gives an especially captivating performance filled with tension and turmoil. Christina Cole and Nathalie Buscombe complete an expressive and engaging trio.
VERDICT Will appeal to listeners seeking a complex, character-driven literary suspense novel about false memories and missing persons. Recommended for fans of Ana Reyes, Shari Lapena, and Mary Kubica.
