First published by Oak Tara in 2010 under the title A Heart of Justice, this second series title has Officer Brinna Caruso and her K-9 rescue dog Hero called in to investigate the death of a young girl whose body is found on the edge of the San Gabriel River. Many of the wounds on the girl's body are not fresh, suggesting long-term abuse. Brinna's search leads to evidence of a human trafficking ring operating in the area. The story flashes between Brinna's attempts to track down the operators of the ring and the day-to-day lives of its unfortunate victims.
VERDICT This hard-edged and chilling narrative rings with authenticity. Cantore is a retired Long Beach, CA, police officer with 22 years of experience on the force, and fans of police suspense fiction will be drawn in by her accurate and dramatic portrayal.
