Mahood’s (Position Doubtful) essays give readers a chance to mindfully explore remote areas of Australia, the second driest continent in the world, and its history. Mahood has worked with First Nations peoples from its desert regions, specifically Warlpiri and Walmajarri people. The author herself grew up in the central part of Australia. The book’s essays range in topic from art and writing, to freedom, the battle between First Nations peoples and colonists, and the latter’s impact on ecological aspects. Some essays examine and depict cross-cultural relationships that seemingly work, while others indicate that these relationships fall short. Some readers may find themselves considering Mahood’s insights and how they compare to the history and treatment of Indigenous peoples on North American soil.
