In 2014, the city of Flint, MI, switched its water supply from Lake Huron to the polluted Flint River. Soon after the switch, people using the water began to experience health problems ranging from rashes to digestive issues. The Flint water purification plant did not use the chemicals mandated by law to make the water safe to use. This failure corroded the city’s water pipes, allowing lead and other contaminants into the tap water. An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease was hushed up by an order from someone in high office in Michigan, and people died. The Flint water crisis gained national attention in 2016 but even this did not lead to solutions. Despite revelations of corruption, malfeasance, and a cover-up from the governor’s office down, no one was punished. The deadly effect of the poisoned water on the people of Flint continues 10 years later. Investigative reporter Chariton provides overwhelming evidence regarding these events and of the failure of government to protect and serve the people it represents. Activist Erin Brockovich provides support and advice in a foreword to the book. Pete Cross and Sophie Amoss narrate with feeling while revealing the shocking details.
VERDICT Listeners will find this a disturbing, eye-opening, cautionary tale, and it is a worthwhile purchase for libraries.
