The Globe Theatre on Screen's 2010 production of William Shakespeare's Henry VIII, which chronicles the Tudor king's (Dominic Rowan) annulment from Queen Katherine, his attachment to Anne Boleyn, and his disassociation from the Catholic Church (leading to the foundation of the Anglican Church), incorporates the theater's unique setting, some innovative direction, and a cast of stalwart British actors. Director Rosenblatt, who was presented the 1999 JMK Award for Young Directors, seamlessly adapts the real-time action on the stage to film, using disparate camera angles to capture both designer Angela Davies's vision of the resplendent court, with long shots of the company, and the psychological drama that underpins the tale. Close-ups showcase the agony and rage of the exiled and tormented Katherine (Kate Duchêne in a show-stealing performance), the ambivalence of a king who desires a male heir, and the machinations of the corrupt Cardinal Wolsey (Ian McNeice).
VERDICT Though perhaps not the finest of Shakespeare's historical dramas, Henry VIII recounts a pivotal period in English history, and the Globe Theatre's topflight production ensures its accessibility for high school and undergraduate students and its appeal to fans of the Bard.
