Rice's fans will savor this lovingly crafted and painstakingly precise work. But given its specificity, it's best for larger collections or where Rice's novels are popular.
A solid addition to the "Vampire Chronicles" full of blood-drinker mythology and complicated interpersonal relationships, this is Rice at her best. Devoted fans will devour this, as there are numerous nuggets about minor characters, and new readers can use this volume as a launching point to explore the series and characters. [See Prepub Alert, 4/30/18.]
Series fans should not miss this latest foray into Rice's magical world built around the undead, but anyone with an interest in the supernatural and aficionados of richly detailed and lush backdrops will enjoy this epic tale. [See Prepub Alert, 5/1/14.]
Future conflict with the rival wolves, Reuben's family, and authorities are themes Rice devotees will eagerly anticipate in a third installment. The author's richly detailed vignettes and Victorian overtones will please fans of The Witching Hour, while readers interested in supernatural lore without heavy romance or graphically violent plotlines will want to follow this series. [See Prepub Alert, 4/29/13.]
Werewolf fans and anyone who enjoys Rice's books, especially her vampire saga, will be drawn thoroughly into this one and find themselves hoping for a sequel. [The Knopf hc, published in February, was a New York Times best seller; see LJ Xpress Reviews, 1/27/12.—Ed.]
She's done vampires and witches and angels, so why not werewolves? Rice's latest, a modern retelling of the werewolf legend just announced for February 2012, is both a return and a departure...
This metaphysical thriller will appeal to historical fiction fans and Christian fiction readers, but it still feels a little flat and will disappoint fans of Rice's vampire fiction. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 7/10; Rice recently announced on Facebook that she's no longer a Christian but will continue her metaphysical series about angels.]
