Brennan is well known for her psychological thrillers and this is another great addition that will be enjoyed by mystery and psychological thriller readers. [See Prepub Alert, 7/29/19.]
The tenth entry in Brennan's Lucy Kincaid series (after Best Laid Plans) can stand mostly on its own, but new readers may struggle to figure out characters and their relationships. Otherwise, the narrative moves quickly and keeps readers' attention. While not an exceptional thriller, it is a good one, made more interesting by Lucy's profiling skills. Series fans and readers who enjoy Karin Slaughter and similar authors will add this to their to-read lists.
Brennan knows how to ratchet up the suspense while also balancing the tension with well-drawn, sympathetic characters. Revere's strength and confidence ooze off the page even when the odds get stacked against her, and her resolve in the face of danger is refreshing. It's not necessary to have read Notorious to enjoy this tale, but readers will feel compelled to track it down after reading this one. [See Prepub Alert, 10/13/14.]
