The 16th Kate Burkholder mystery (following An Evil Heart) is another riveting police procedural. Despite the violence and some graphic, gruesome details, fans will be eager for the latest well-developed mystery set in Ohio’s Amish country.
The follow-up to The Hidden One is a compelling, violent police procedural, alleviated by the love and tenderness surrounding the upcoming wedding. Those who watched Kate’s developing relationship will enjoy the storyline surrounding the wedding and the skill with which the author juggles crime and kindness.
This intense, suspenseful whodunit is full of twists and turns, red herrings, and an OMG ending, with a realistic mix of English and Amish cultures. Fans of this series, realistic crime drama, and multicultural or Amish literature will find this mystery unputdownable.
As with any collection, some stories are stronger than others, and the author doesn’t have much opportunity to develop the plot. Castillo shines when she focuses on the Amish lifestyle, and in the longer stories with more opportunity to delve into the plot. Kate Burkholder fans will want to pick this up while waiting for the next full-length offering from the author.
Castillo’s 12th “Kate Burkholder” novel (after Shamed) is a suspenseful, culture-melding nail-biter mixing nonstop action, a timely plot, and street-tough dialog, delivering a gritty crime drama with a realistic look at the Amish lifestyle. Fans of the series and crime dramas à la Marta Perry and Lisa Gardner will find this hard to put down. [See Prepub Alert, 1/7/20.]
