Will appeal to listeners seeking an offbeat, optimistic mystery with stress-free suspense. Recommended for fans of Andrew Shaffer, Christopher Moore, and Alexander McCall Smith.
Fans of Alexander McCall Smith and Boris Akunin will enjoy this gently ironic series. Definitely recommended for its inclusive characters, humor, and a thought-provoking ending. [See Prepub Alert, 12/11/17.]
Besides presenting an intriguing mystery set in an unfamiliar culture, Cotterill compellingly portrays an ancient country in the midst of great transition. Readers who enjoy the Asian mysteries of Eliot Pattinson, Tim Hallinan, and John Burdett will also savor this title.
Cotterill is internationally known for a reason: his unforgettable stories. This will appeal to fans of the series and to fans of K.J. Larson's Cat deLuca mysteries or Lisa Lutz's "Spellman Files."
While readers new to this series will laugh and enjoy Cotterill's madcap and zany mystery, I recommend first reading the initial title (Killed at the Whim of a Hat) to appreciate fully Jimm's family and community. The author's natural gift for irony, well demonstrated in his earlier Dr. Siri series (Slash and Burn; The Merry Misogynist), is to be relished.
Adept Dr. Siri (Love Songs from a Shallow Grave) once again turns to Georges Simenon's fictional Inspector Maigret for inspiration. Don't even think about missing this final volume; the entire series is destined to be a classic. Readers who enjoy Michael Stanley's Dr. Kubu series will find themselves addicted to this one as well.
