As in her other mysteries, Davis has created a fascinating world, populated it with original characters, and laid out a captivating plot. Appropriate for teen readers and up, with only a few modest moments of a violent or sexual nature. [See Prepub Alert, 1/30/17.]
As Albia evolves with each new installment, Davis steps closer to achieving the success of the "Marcus Falco" mysteries. While touching on mature subjects this title does so without being crude. Appropriate for teens and anyone interested in historicals set in antiquity. [Library marketing.]
This series launch is a great read for mystery fans but is especially suggested for those who enjoy their crime fiction in a historical setting. There are some sexual themes and very mild violence, but nothing is explicit or inappropriate for teenagers.
British actor Robin Sachs brings a polished, measured decorum to his narration, but it’s surprising that a feminine counterpoint was not provided for Flavia. Further, the Author’s Notes included in print have been omitted. [“Davis’s Marcus Didius Falco mysteries are so deftly observed that I have no trouble recommending this historical saga. All historical fiction fans should enjoy,” read the review of the St. Martin’s Press hc, LJ 5/1/12.—Ed.]
Another well-plotted Falco mystery, more emotionally complex than others, but it may unsettle some fans; yes, it's darker, and our boys push the envelope in their search for justice. Still important for lovers of historical mystery.
