A worthy addition to the ongoing effort to publish all of Hemingway’s letters, this volume will be welcomed by scholars, students, and general readers with a more than casual interest in the man and his work.
Hemingway did not want his letters published, but this carefully researched scholarly edition does them justice. Carlos Baker's 1981 edition of Hemingway's Selected Letters may suffice for casual readers; however, devotees will find this and future volumes indispensable.
As close to a full-length Hemingway autobiography as possible, these letters provide a unique opportunity for framing him in everyday perspective and, frankly, humanizing him. Academics and aficionados will want this initial volume, but the best is yet to come.
