Hurley's (The Stars Are Legion) take on war and interplanetary adventure is mixed with a vigorous helping of time travel, which will have readers trying to catch up with the truth as much as the lead character. An absorbing and gritty story from this accomplished author.
Hurley's first foray into sf (her fantasies include the "Worldbreaker Saga," which began with The Mirror Empire), shows that the author hasn't lost any of her taste for exotically fantastic creations. Fans of unreliable narrators will enjoy puzzling out who owes loyalty to whom in this stand-alone. [See Prepub Alert, 8/22/16.]
Recommended for larger libraries. ["A great introduction for geek guys seeking to understand and reassurance for women that the injustices, while real, are survivable": LJ 6/1/16 review of the Tor hc.]
This is a hugely ambitious work, bloody and violent, with interestingly gender-flipped politics and a host of factions to keep straight, as points of view switch often. Although it is a challenging read, the strong narrative thread in this new series from Hurley (God's War) pulls readers through the imaginative tangle of multiple worlds and histories colliding.
