This generously researched and compelling novel will draw readers deep into Isobel’s refusal to be suppressed and her determination to live life on her own terms. It is a seductive, ambitious, and triumphant story of resilience and courage.
This book is relatively entertaining but a little flat. The characters, unfortunately, are mostly shallow or uncomfortably obsessed with weight, which is concerning. The pacing is quick though, rushing toward an abrupt but satisfying conclusion.
DeFonzo worked for more than a decade to preserve Del’s past and the historical context. Hers is a deeply personal venture but also one of significant importance now and for all future generations to learn from. Recommended to readers of World War II nonfiction, history, and family memoirs.
Macneal’s lavish descriptions and vivid characterizations enrich the themes of exploitation, freedom, self-love, and redemption. A must for fans of historical fiction.
