Despite the unlikable trio of characters, this latest psychological thriller from LaPlante (A Circle of Wives; Turn of Mind) is sure to satisfy the author's fans. [See Prepub Alert, 1/22/17.]
Anna's contradictions—her vulnerability and her tendency for making dangerous choices—make her hard to love and her story hard to put down. [See Prepub Alert, 2/23/15.]
This is an ingenious mystery with a highly unreliable narrator. Full of twists and turns, it will keep fans of Before I Go To Sleep and Gone Girl guessing right up to the end. (LJ 3/1/11)
Though a murder mystery serves as the backdrop to LaPlante's tale, her characters tell the story. The narration alternates from chapter to chapter and from woman to woman. An investigation of a crime becomes an exploration of the choices these women made and the resulting impact. Fans of character-driven puzzles will find much to like in this psychological novel. [See Prepub Alert, 10/20/13; 12-city tour; library marketing.]
This extraordinarily crafted debut novel guides the reader through family drama that is becoming all too familiar. That the author is able to do it so convincingly through the eyes and voice of the central character is an amazing achievement. Heartbreaking and stunning, this is both compelling and painful to read. [See Prepub Alert, 1/3/11.]
