Black, a former forensics investigator, skillfully portrays the stark realities of homicide cases in her latest thriller (after Close to the Bone). In this series launch, she pairs Maggie with Jack Renner, a determined detective with secrets of his own who has no intention of allowing murderers to evade their punishment. A great choice for readers of psychological suspense, forensic investigations, and mystery.
The focus here is less on Banks and more on the no-nonsense DS Winsome Jackman, her background, and the possibility of a romance. The series remains absorbing, and procedural fans will be satisfied. Robinson's portrayal of the realities of slaughterhouses will, no doubt, inspire new commitments to vegetarianism. [See Prepub Alert, 2/23/15.]
Clark's fifth historical installment (after A Parliament of Spies) can be read as part of the series or as a stand-alone. However, this latest addition is likely to disappoint readers, as the wise nun foolishly places herself in dangerous positions one after the other. From walking alone in the woods to working solo in isolated areas of the priory, Hildegard is repeatedly rescued when someone shows up just in time. Still, Clark's fans and medieval mystery aficionados may enjoy.
Unger's skillful portrayal of complex and traumatized characters make her latest psychological thriller (after In the Blood) one that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Fans of mystery and suspense, along with Unger aficionados, will enjoy this imaginative tale, which may be the author's best work yet. [See Prepub Alert, 8/11/14.]
The three-time Edgar Award-winning author (The Water's Lovely; Portobello) creates another riveting story with her sharp characterization and keen sense of irony that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Fans of mystery and psychological suspense, along with Rendell's loyal following, will love this complex story. [See Prepub Alert, 5/12/14.]
Unger's (Beautiful Lies) latest offering is full of engaging twists and turns. She tells the story from Lana's point of view but skillfully keeps the reader guessing as to what dark secrets the character is hiding. Fans of mystery and psychological suspense, along with Unger's fans, will be delighted with this imaginative story. [See Prepub Alert, 7/15/13; library marketing.]
