While the historical facts could be more smoothly woven into the flow of the story, this bibliophilic novel will please fans of the bestselling historical novels that Murray coauthored with Marie Benedict (The Personal Librarian and The First Ladies).
Fans of Benedict and Murray’s first book will be delighted with this well-researched account of a groundbreaking friendship. Recommended for those who enjoyed Kelly O’Connor McNees’s Undiscovered Country.
Those who enjoy stirring historical fiction, as well as fans of The Personal Librarian, will find Benedict and Murray’s latest collaboration compelling.
This fictional account of Greene’s life feels authentic; the authors bring to life not only Belle but all those around her. An excellent piece of historical fiction that many readers will find hard to put down.
Prolific novelist and NAACP Image Award winner Murray considers one sin in particular (the titular lust) and its deadly consequences in a story about a sheltered Washington, DC, woman, her fiancé, and his childhood best friend who has plans for payback...
Murray's writing admirably shows the often overlooked human emotions following racial violence. At one point Janice sadly summarizes her son's death. "A white man, a black teen, a gun, a dead black teen." Although several characters come off as cartoonish, the shady legal maneuverings are totally believable and the pulled-from-the headlines storyline will captivate readers.
Murray spices up her storyline with plenty of juicy scandals but the sex is more PG- 13 than X-rated. Readers seeking an inspirational tale with broad themes of trust, betrayal, and forgiveness will do well by choosing Murray's latest effort.
