An Ealing comedy in prose, with a wry, gimlet-eyed girl at its tender and comic heart and surrounded by a large cast of spot-on character actors, dead-on period detail, and a bang-up finish, this coming-of-age story with not much sex (they're British, after all) is guaranteed to amuse and delight.
