Listening to the audiobook version and hearing the tension, anguish, and, at times, happiness, provides a deeper connection to the characters in an already outstanding story.
Not always a comfortable read, but a compelling one, this book is appropriate for readers who like complex family dramas in exotic locations. [See Prepub Alert, 12/17/18.]
Recommended for all popular collections. ["Willig, best known for her best-selling 'Pink Carnation' series, has a knack for creating sympathetic characters and fully fleshed settings, adding some juicy plot twists to this atmospheric period piece": LJ 9/15/17 review of the St. Martin's hc.]
Fans of historical mystery series such as those by Victoria Thompson or Lawrence H. Levy will appreciate this stand-alone drama. [See Prepub Alert, 7/0/17.]
Anyone looking for a well-crafted historical mystery series will want to start at the beginning for full enjoyment and will give thanks for the suggestion. [See Prepub Alert, 2/9/15.]
Willig's (That Summer; The Ashford Affair) judicious use of 1920s slang and famous names to be spotted by alert readers creates a strong sense of place and time; she also respects the social hierarchy required to depict genuine British aristocracy of the time. This stand-alone will appeal equally to longtime Willig fans and readers looking for character-driven, historical fiction with a light touch of romance. [See Prepub Alert, 11/25/15; library marketing.]
This 11th "Pink Carnation" title (The Passion of the Purple Plumeria) is a rollicking good time and a perfect fit for this glorious, long-running historical series. Threats of blood-sucking aristocrats just add to the fun as Turnip and the gang from previous installments join in to thwart the villain and secure a happily ever after. Willig's fans will adore this penultimate series title, leading up the finale coming in 2015.
A well-rounded group of characters, clearly connected ties between alternating time periods, and a jaw-dropping conclusion make for one engaging story. Fans will appreciate the author's nod to her "Pink Carnation" series, but this title can be read alone. A winning suggestion for any age, this satisfying novel could also be a strong book discussion selection. [See Prepub Alert, 11/18/13; library marketing.]
This charming production is recommended for popular collections. ["Fans can rejoice in finding the outstanding features they've come to count on: intriguing historical details, double-crossing deceptions, complex characters, and plenty of romance. Readers will be pleased to discover a more mature couple featured within the historical portion of the story…and the continued progression of our beloved contemporary couple," read the starred review of the NAL trade pb, LJ 7/13.]
