Although some essays would benefit from the inclusion of explanatory notes to provide context and historical background, this delightful book is highly recommended for all Alcott devotees.
Readers who found Shealy's title a bit too detailed might do well with this one. Those who appreciated the earlier edition will find Matteson's less enlightening.
Although annotated editions of Little Women already exist (e.g., the 2004 Norton Critical Edition that Shealy cites several times), this one, in presentation and explication is not geared simply to scholars but is equally inviting to the general reader, breathing new life and relevance into an enduring American classic.
