Solving the murder and staying safe while exploring their newfound love, the characters Sarah and Nick make this a great third book in the series from Cassidy (Monster in the Marsh).
While there is a happy ending for the couple, the implication throughout the book (from the heroine herself, two of her married friends, and many of her fellow townspeople) that 45-year-old Harper is far too old to date 33-year-old Sam and that he couldn’t possibly fall in love with someone that age, is likely to sit poorly with many readers.
The pacing of this story feels uneven, since the threats to Mary’s life are resolved quite a bit earlier than her relationship with Lucas. An implausible antagonist and a serial killer that feels more cartoonish than truly terrifying, combine to make this first book in Cassidy’s (Gunsmoke in the Grassland) new series, “The Scarecrow Murders,” a less-than-satisfying read.
Hallmark fans with just a passing interest in mystery will enjoy Cassidy’s (Stalker in the Shadows) story more than avid mystery fans, particularly as the murders have a theme that many readers will pick up on much more quickly than the characters.
