The sequel to The Art of Prophecy highlights the drive for personal purpose, no matter what one may believe. Chu’s delightful and immersive story pays tribute to martial arts and magic and is filled with enlightened and humorous dialogue.
Clocking in at almost 19 hours, this is a hefty book, but listeners will be captivated by the intricate worldbuilding and satisfying character development. An engrossing series starter that is highly recommended for fans of Ken Liu, Yong Jin, and Nghi Vo.
Chu’s (The Fall of Io) wry prose and characters are a delightful counterpoint to the physical and emotional demands undertaken by Jian and his allies, while the subplots build a vast panoramic view of this incredible world in the first of a new series.
Chu, author of the "Lives of Tao" series, has penned a thrilling sf adventure. While James isn't the smartest nor the most ethical of men, the story gives him room to grow and a marvelous foil in Elise. Other secondary characters shine, including Grace Priestly, another figure from the past whom James kidnaps, and a truly menacing operative of the corporation bankrolling time travel for its own ends.
