Cornwell’s fans will be captivated by Scarpetta’s detailed description of the retrieval and autopsies of two battered bodies. A grisly but intriguing entry in a long-running crime fiction series.
Scarpetta is brilliant, compassionate and humble, excelling in her profession and in diplomacy while trying to solve a heinous crime during a pandemic, dealing with combative coworkers, on call for the president and navigating a post–January 6 militarized DC. Longtime fans will cheer Scarpetta’s return in this timely tale; although all events are novel-specific, the series is best read in order.
Deduction is the key to solving this mystery, and Scarpetta fans will relish this nail-biting novel, Cornwell's debut with publisher Morrow. [See Prepub Alert, 5/12/14; turn to p. 80 for a profile of Cornwell.—Ed.]
The Scarpetta franchise is very tired and should be allowed to retire much more gracefully. Reader Kate Reading may be the sole saving grace—familiar with the characters and to listeners—but even she seems weary of it all. Not recommended. ["Cornwell's latest overwhelms the plot with distracting details that contribute little to the overall story.... Fans, however, may overlook these distractions," read the review of the New York Times best-selling Putnam hc, LJ Xpress Reviews, 12/9/11.—Ed.]
