Nothing More Dangerous

This powerful, unforgettable crime novel is a coming-of-age book to rival some of the best, such as William Kent Krueger’s Ordinary Grace or Larry Watson’s Montana 1948. While Eskens’s books are not part of a series, his readers will recognize Boady as an adult character in two of his earlier books, including the award-winning The Life We Bury. This timely stand-alone is a must-read for followers of the best in crime fiction.

The Shadows We Hide

Featuring characters from Eskens's debut, The Life We Bury, this title by the "Max Rupert" mysteries author begins slowly but gains momentum as the circumstances surrounding Toke's death unravel. While the ending wraps up a little too perfectly, readers will enjoy the ride. Newcomers will be able to follow the story but may wish they had started with the first book. The Deep Dark Descending

Edgar Award winner Eskens's fourth mystery (after The Heavens May Fall)—and the third in which Max Rupert appears—takes the "will he or won't he" revenge theme and layers it with darkly convincing action and intricate plotting. Packed with heart-wrenching twists, this bleak book will haunt readers who favor an evocative and compelling sense of dread along with a dose of noir.

The Guise of Another

Readers will be hooked on the probe into the mysterious dead man from the opening chapter. The investigation and clues unfold quickly, and the story reads satisfyingly well. Unfortunately, Eskens (The Life We Bury) gets bogged down in backstory details about hit man Drago Basta, and the storytelling loses momentum. Fans of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch or Lisa Gardner's Detective D.D. Warren series will likely eat this one up.
