This slow-paced, noir-style mystery can be read as a stand-alone, but newcomers will have a richer experience having read the previous books. Raw and atmospheric, this is a solid finale to the series.
This seventh series installment from Hallinan (In Fields Where They Lay), a sort of West Coast Damon Runyon who has been short-listed for about every mystery genre prize, displays his ability to spin the merest gossamer into an engaging, flip, 300-plus-page novel that goes down very smoothly.—Bob Lunn, Kansas City, MO
In his eighth Bangkok-set adventure (after The Hot Countries), Poke Rafferty has 48 hours to rescue Buddy, the father of one of his daughter Miaow's friends, who has been kidnapped by a pair of killers who prey on the city's "sexpats...
Hallinan offers up everything readers could want in a hard-boiled crime novel with an action-packed story and a cast of colorful characters. [See Prepub Alert, 4/10/16.]
Twists and turns abound as Junior slips and ducks incoming blows. A rare man of integrity in a world of tinsel and dust, Junior may steal for a living, but he has scruples and will do anything to protect his loved ones. Fans of fast-paced thrillers with a lot of heart will enjoy this series.
Devoted fans of Hallinan's rollicking L.A.-based series will grab up number four (after The Fame Thief). While the author excels at comedic prose and intricate plotting, this entry is more reflective than earlier titles. Although victims fall left and right, Hallinan somehow keeps it light.
Hallinan's natural storytelling skills will hold readers rapt through his Shakespeare-quoting, five-act tale as they relish his attention to Los Angeles cultural details and ability to weave two time periods together so effectively. This third series entry (after Little Elvises) manages to keep it simultaneously playful yet empathetic.
In this second series outing (after Crashed), Hallinan's characters and dialog are top-notch, with a lively plot full of witty banter and comic scenes that will keep readers laughing. The author of the Thailand-set Poke Rafferty thrillers (The Queen of Patpong) first self-published this trilogy (next up is The Fame Thief) titles as ebooks.
