Marked by Harkness’s deft evocations and appreciation of learning, this is a book to treasure. The portentous ending, rife with new story threads and threats, will leave readers hoping that she doesn’t wait another six years to continue the series.

History, science, and the unpredictable actions of paranormal characters with hidden agendas all swirl together to create a not-to-be-missed finale to a stellar paranormal series. Readers new to the trilogy should read the novels in order, as an understanding of past events and the players involved is essential for full enjoyment of this final book. Harkness expertly weaves threads of science, history, and the occult around a passionate love story. Twilight fans looking for a more mature literary tale will enjoy this but should read A Discovery of Witches before diving into this installment in order to appreciate it fully.
