This is Herron's final title in her "Songbirds" trilogy (after The Darling Songbirds; The Songbird's Call). After some ungainly phrasing in the beginning, the story settles ultimately into a very moving look at the harm that assault causes to individuals and their families. For fans of Herron (The Ones Who Matter Most), romance, and women's fiction.
Herron (Splinters of Light) cleverly creates in Abby and Fern two characters with emotional depth, weaving a vivid and moving story of unlikely connections. For fans of character-driven women's fiction such as books by Kristin Hannah (The Nightingale). [See "Editors' Spring Picks," LJ 2/15/16, p. 30.]
Very much like Lisa Genova's Still Alice (although the writing here is better!), this title is sure to resonate with fans of issue-driven domestic fiction such as that of Jodi Picoult and Genova and will have the book clubs lining up.
Herron's second novel will earn her a well-deserved place in the ever-expanding knit-chick lit genre. Patrons who in the past have clamored for the novels of Debbie Macomber, Kate Jacobs, or Gil McNeil will definitely find this a good read.
