Higashino’s fifth Detective Galileo procedural (after Silent Parade) relies too much on coincidence and contrivance to solve Ryoto’s murder, which may cause readers to wonder how Professor Galileo comes to puzzle out the case.
This solid police procedural, the third in the Kaga series (after Newcomer), stands alone. Despite a less than compelling plot, fans of smart detectives with less observant, more laid-back sidekicks (à la Holmes and Watson) will enjoy this book through all its twists and turns.
Readers will frequently think, “I’ve got it,’’ only to have to begin again because of the brilliant twists in this unique story. Those looking for an uncommon mystery will be delighted.
For fans of the author, Seicho- Matsumoto, and other writers of deliberately paced mysteries. [See Prepub Alert, 5/14/18; "Editors' Fall Picks," LJ 8/18.]
For collections seeking to go more global, this or any Higashino title will prove to be worthy of acquisition. ["Filled with surprises and plot twists, this complex and riveting mystery will keep readers guessing until the final page": LJ 1/16 starred review of the Minotaur: St. Martin's hc.]

This intricate, sophisticated story will pique the interest of the most avid mystery readers, especially those who loved the author’s acclaimed The Devotion of Suspect X.
