If you're in the mood for a love story, look elsewhere. If you want a crime thriller, try one of Buchanan's earlier titles. However, if you're a fan of historical crime sagas reminiscent of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, give this one a shot. [See Prepub Alert, 5/23/11.]—Julie Pierce, Fort Myers-Lee Cty. Short on flowery descriptions but peppered with snappy dialog, this hard-boiled mystery by award winner Lister (Double Exposure) is a swell read for tough guys and gals who "just want the facts, ma'am."
This relationship-heavy novel may appeal to World War II historical fiction buffs, though very little war action is described. Comparisons might be drawn to Ian McEwan's Atonement. There is plenty for book groups to discuss; a reading group guide is included. [See Prepub Alert, 12/20/10.]
World War I history buffs will enjoy this mystery, as will fans of period pieces set in London. Readers who like Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series will enjoy this as well. [Previewed in M.M. Adjarian's genre spotlight, "Dispatches from the Edge," LJ 4/15/11.—Ed.]
British journalist/novelist Moyes's (Horsedancer) latest book is the perfect read for those who enjoy a more serious romance as well as a British turn of phrase ("darling, be a dear and fetch me another drink"). Reminiscent of Janice Y.K. Lee's The Piano Teacher (but with more likable characters) or Jamie Ford's The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, it will appeal to fans of those titles.
