This well-written and emotional tale of daring women, espionage, and lasting friendship should appeal strongly to fans of Kelly’s previous novels, especially Lilac Girls, which shares a few characters as well as the setting of the Ravensbrück concentration camp. This is also a great read-alike pick for the novels by Kate Quinn, Pam Jenoff, and Ariel Lawhon that feature women spy protagonists.

Sunflower Sisters
Some of the characters in Sunflower Sisters seem rather two-dimensional (particularly the arrogant male doctors Georgey encounters), and the three–protagonist formula that worked so well in Lilac Girls falters a bit here as the urgency and suspense of Jemma’s narrative completely outstrips those of the other two women. Overall, however, this emotionally satisfying novel will please Kelly’s many fans and will be a strong addition to historical fiction collections.

Overall, this novel builds to an emotionally satisfying conclusion, and readers who loved Lilac Girls will likely be keen to learn more about the Ferridays. Also suggest to fans of recent Russian historical fiction hits such as Amor Towles's A Gentleman in Moscow and C.W. Gortner's The Romanov Empress.
