While the complex plot leads to an exciting climax, the multitude of story lines incorporate coincidences that can test readers' suspension of disbelief. Familiarizing yourself with previous books in the series is heavily suggested as it will provide a better understanding of Annika, the supporting characters, and some plotlines that have continued from the earlier books. Fans of Anne Holt will enjoy Marklund.

With its insistent crosscutting, this Swedish thriller is confusing and disengaging. Marklund's characterizations lean toward the narcissistic and self-absorbed, producing a tone of mean-spiritedness against the backdrop of murder. Fans of this series will likely remain loyal; however, potential new converts might be deterred. [See Prepub Alert, 10/21/11.]

In the fifth book of her internationally best-selling series (which is not written chronologically), Marklund blends the sociology and politics of contemporary Sweden with a taut mystery, capturing the Scandinavian chill as she builds suspense to an eminently satisfying conclusion. This excellent addition to the Nordic crime scene will also appeal to readers who enjoyed her outing this summer with James Patterson in The Postcard Killers.
