The fifth “Kendra Donovan” novel is an atmospheric and character-driven mystery. The time travel, intrigue, romance, and returning characters will appeal to Diana Gabaldon’s fans
Despite some awkward use of 21st-century jargon, this is an entertaining mystery with considerable period detail and a touch of romance. Fans of historical mysteries with strong female characters, such as Rhys Bowen’s “Molly Murphy” series or Laurie King’s “Mary Russell” books will enjoy.
For the full effect, read the acclaimed series launch before delving into this treasure. The author does not address whether, as a time traveler, Kendra's actions will affect the future, but the intricacy of the plot teamed with the romance between Alec and Kendra make this a nonissue.
This first novel is absolutely captivating and will appeal to readers of fiction, mystery, and romance. Expect to stay engaged until the final page. Author, a sequel, please! [An April LibraryReads pick.]
